1.04: Opportunity…

Sarah hasn’t spoken to me in a couple days, and it’s starting to worry me. I can’t lose her — she’s my one and only lead, and I’d made so much progress already! Not to mention that my boss was on my tail and watching my every move…

“Pick up, pick up, pick up… Damnit!” I cursed, throwing it onto my bed when it went to voicemail yet again.

I shouldn’t have pushed her, but what choice did I have? Now, my only hope was Roderick possibly finding me another lead… And the chances of that happening before this mission was over were slim to none. Damnit

When I finally looked up again, I made a mental note to start looking for myself. I may not have the expert skills that Roderick has, but maybe something will come up… Heading over to my computer, I quickly got to work looking up anything I could find.

I didn’t even notice time passing until the sun started to set. And the only reason I noticed that was when a knock came from the front door. Nobody came to visit me, especially not this late in the day… The only person who ever came to visit me was…

No, it couldn’t possibly be… Could it?

What was she doing here? And why did she look like that? Hesitantly, I opened the door, a gun tucked into the back of my pants for safety measures while my brain recited every method to combat an attack. Something was going on, and I didn’t like it one bit…

“Sarah? What are you doing here?”

Her toe drug through the dirt on my front porch, her gaze falling to the concrete she was standing on. The gesture seemed sincere — if I didn’t know it was Sarah doing it.

“I… I need your help.” She said quietly.

“Help? With what, scrapbooking? Because you know I s-”

“Will you take this seriously for one minute?” She snapped, glaring at me.

“Alright, what do you need help with?”

She was silent for a moment, seemingly lost in her thoughts.

“My brother called me last night… From an unknown number… He said he needed help, that he was stuck in something really serious, and really bad. He said that if I met somebody named Paige Wilkins, they’d be able to help, but I don’t know how you’d be able to help. Care to explain?”

My fingers graced my chin for a moment, staring at her in an attempt to read her. Was this the truth? If so, was Thomas working for the Scarlet Thorns and trying to get out of the business, or is he just trying to evade what may be inevitable? Either way, it may give me a chance to get closer to the enemy…

“How could we be able to get ahold of him again? I assume calling him from that unknown number could put him in further danger, especially if t-”

“You’re evading my question.”

“I can’t answer your question.”

For a moment, everything was quiet. The air was thick; my heart raced in my chest. What would she do if she doesn’t get an answer.

“Are you part of the Scarlet Thorns?” She asked.

I shook my head. “No, I’m not. Close, but no.”

“The government?”

“Quite the opposite.”

“Will you help my brother or not?”

“Perhaps. Only if I get what I need in return.”

“And what is it that you need?”

My lip twitched into a smirk, and I let my hand release my face.

“I need to get closer to the Scarlet Thorns.”

This time, it was her turn to smile, a hint of a gleam in her eye.

“Oh, I think that can be arranged. Do we have a deal?”

“Deal.”
